The reason why so many of us avoid career transitions is that we’re afraid of change. As a result, we stay stuck in jobs we hate, spending our precious time and energy on careers we don’t want. We’re too afraid to go for the next job or take a leap of faith into the unknown because of certain things that society has implanted in our thoughts. The truth is, ALL of these are myths and you shouldn’t let them get to you.

Here are some of these career transitioning myths debunked

    1. You are too old

It’s never too late to make a career change. In fact, many highly successful people made a  career switch after thirty, some after 40. Jeff Bezos, for example, had a lucrative job on Wall Street before transitioning to e-commerce and launching Amazon at the age of 31.

    1. You must begin from scratch

A career change seems daunting because many people assume they have to start from square one. That is not always the case. Most of the time, you will have transferable skills that you can repackage in your resume and cover letter to better fit the position you’re seeking.

    1. You don’t have all the skills required to make this career transition.

Not having all the skills required for a new career should not prevent you from making the transition. You can always acquire new skills, and gain more knowledge and experience over time. However, some missed opportunities are hard to re-create or come by again. Don’t let the lack of skills keep you from a great career transition.

    1. You’ll fail at a new career

The fear of failure keeps most of us from making career transitions that could otherwise be beneficial for us. Instead of planning for success, we tend to imagine all the possible negative scenarios. Instead, keep your eyes focused on the goal and positive outcomes, and watch yourself successfully make your career transition.
