From fine-tuning your elevator pitch and practicing the common difficult questions to getting your best outfit ready, there’s plenty to do before the big day. However, if you’ve been scheduled for a Zoom video call, you’d also want to pay attention to other areas you may not consider in a physical one.

These mistakes below should be avoided

    Unprofessional background

Choosing a good location for your Zoom interview is advisable. A good trick is to set a suitable virtual background on Zoom. Some examples of good virtual backgrounds include images of Bookshelves, simple neat rooms, an office, or a plain wall.

Having the call in Noisy Space

Avoid having interviews in a noisy, distracting space.

It’s best to conduct the interview from a quiet place or one where there is little noise so as not to be interrupted by noise and interruptions. This also saves time because people can stop focusing on how difficult it is to hear and instead focus on what you are saying.

    Not looking into the camera

Make sure that as you’re speaking, you’re looking into the camera. This helps create an illusion that you’re looking at your conversation partner and making strong eye contact, rather than just looking randomly somewhere on the screen.

    Not using a well-lit space

The room should be well-lit enough such that the interviewer is able to properly see your face. Don’t sit with your back to the window, especially during the daytime, as the light coming in may make it difficult for the recruiter to see you.

    Not asking relevant questions

Job interviews should feel like a conversation with both parties asking and answering questions. Just because you are the one being interviewed, doesn’t mean you cannot ask questions. In fact, if you do ask relevant questions, the interviewer will get an idea that you did your pre-interview research and are seriously interested in the job.
