Title: Negotiating my first salary (A personal experience)

 The first time I negotiated a salary, my lips felt too heavy and my heart wouldn’t stop beating fast. I was terrified to do it and I would have been comfortable being offered a sum by the company, however, they wanted me to name a figure I was comfortable with. It was my first big job, after NYSC and I was to resume as the junior lawyer for a big law firm. A 21 year old! I had researched the position and how much people make on average in that position and I thought I was ready. But once it was time to speak, the words wouldn’t come out.  It took a top manager speaking to me and encouraging me to ask for what I wanted before I got the courage to speak.Timidly, I spoke up and named a figure. The room went quiet for a few seconds and the silence was deafening. I summoned courage and looked up to find 5 faces staring at me in amazement. A lot began to run through my mind. “Had I asked for too much? Had I spoken wrongly? Had I killed my chances?”

 After what seemed like an eternity, the COO, coughed and said, “We will pay you **** and in 6 months, it will be reviewed.”

That was quite a while ago at the time I was happy with what I got. But in other future times, when I negotiated my salary with bigger organizations, I played hardball on benefits when I didn’t get everything I wanted on the money side.

 I’ll pass on the same advice I was given, which is to always negotiate your salary/benefits! Know your worth, and do your research. Don’t just ask for more because you think you can. Be prepared to prove to them why you deserve it.
