NEED MENTORSHIP?

Have you ever asked someone to mentor you before?

 

One time, an accountant sent me a dm stating that he would love for me to mentor him professionally. I shook! Many of us take mentoring the wrong way; including me. Now that I know better, I’ll share.

We think that mentorship is a one-way relationship. Your mentor will be the one dragging you to grow (Ain’t nobody got time for that). Mentorship is a two-way relationship and it comes with DOING!

How did I get Uncle Henry @henryanumudu to mentor me? I started DOING! and He saw what I was doing and decided to follow up on my growth.

 

People take you more seriously when you’re doing and giving value consistently. Mentorship is about VALUE! No matter how little, make sure you’re giving value. How stressful can it be when your friend only takes from you and gives absolutely nothing back? So you can imagine why your ‘potential mentors’ are running from you because you have no value to offer.

How about next time, before asking someone you admire to mentor you, you get some groundwork done, follow their books, posts, speeches and courses if possible and then carve out what value you can offer to them.

Lemme give you a scenario

Scenario 1: Hello ma, I really love what you’re doing in the ... sector. I’m an emerging this and that. Please can you mentor me?

 

Scenario 2: Hello ma, I really love what you’re doing in the ... sector. I’ve done this and while doing this, I came across your book on ... and I noticed there was no audio version. Would you mind if I helped translate it to an audiobook so that more people can access it?

What do you think about the two scenarios?

 

For the first, the person might not even read your message or but for the second, the person will read and reply you instanta because there’s VALUE in it. She would even follow up on your work and personal growth.

And VOILA! You just found yourself a mentor.

 

Stop asking! Start doing and bringing value to the table. You’ll find someone or people who will take interest in you and will not mind investing their time and resources to see that you make progress on your life’s journey.
