The word “Sòrò Sókè” has been one of the trending words across the media. Sòrò Sókè is a Yoruba word which means Speak up or Speak louder.
In the last few days, the word “Sòrò Sókè” has resonated with me so much, probably because I am generally a very quiet and introverted person. I have had to question myself almost every minute whether, in my personal life, workplace, and in the society I Sòrò Sókè. This is beyond the social media outcry.
Speaking up and expressing your thought at work, in school, and in the society reflects who you are and what you represent. Your voice has power and it shows the value you bring to the society and your organization. In the workplace, no one wants to be labeled as someone who brings no value or opinion to the table. Having no opinion to offer at work is bad for both your identity (personal brand) and your career. Sometimes, your identity is misunderstood because you keep mute, they override you in the workplace because you don’t use your voice.
To become a person of value, worthy of respect, your voice must always be heard.
So also, in the society,
What value are you bringing to the society?
What course are you lending your voice to?
In the workplace, is your voice being heard?
In your personal life, have you learnt to Sòrò Sókè?
Here are areas the society needs you to Sòrò Sókè:
· Financial literacy
· Youth & girl child empowerment
· Sustainable Development Goals
· Human right advocacy
· End police brutality
· Gender equality
In teamwork, silence isn’t golden, it’s deadly.
